BGS
The British Geological Survey is the UK's national centre for Earth
science information. It forms part of the Natural Environment Research
Council which funds research in the environmental sciences in universities
and other organisations throughout the UK. The sort of people who
work there include geologists,
seismologists and volcanologists.
As well as doing research, BGS provides services and advice in the
earth sciences. For example, they can advise on earthquake activity
in the UK. Engineers who check the safety of nuclear power stations
and large dams need to know this information so that they can make
sure these structures will not be affected badly by earthquakes.
