A hydrophone is an electronic instrument used to measure changing water pressure. A cable connecting to the hydrophone carries an electrical signal back to monitoring and recording equipment. A hydrophone is actually an underwater microphone that can record the sounds of dolphins, for example.

Sound waves in water are exactly the same as pressure waves which spread out from an object vibrating in or against the water.
