IDEERS Inelastic Deformation Experiments - 1

Make Elastic Deformations

Bend the straight section of the hanger gently, and then release it. What happens ? (Answer)

What's going on ?

The hanger behaves like an elastic (or rubber) band. If you stretch it, but not too far, it returns to its original shape when you let go. This is called elastic behaviour.

The energy you used to push the hanger is stored as elastic potential energy until you let go. This energy is then used to spring the hanger back into shape.
