How much do the steel blocks weigh?

The blocks are steel and they weigh about 635g each.

How large are the steel blocks?

The blocks are 6.0 x 4.5 x 3.0 cm big but you should allow for some slight differences in their size when making the supports for the blocks on your models.

How should I add weights to the top floor of the model?

For general info about adding the weights see

http://www.ideers.bris.ac.uk/comp/model_make_fix.html

Specifically, you should add some sort of restraint to stop the weights falling off the model when we test it. Have a look at

http://www.ideers.bris.ac.uk/comp/modeldb/model12_large.jpg

You can see some extra bits of MDF added on the top floor to do this.

You could use string instead of MDF to tie the weights down or use a combination of both i.e. as long as the weights can be securely attached you can use any technique you like.

Can we use string to hold the steel blocks in place?

The best way to keep the steel blocks in the building is to make an MDF cage slightly larger than the blocks. When the models are mounted on the shaking table you will be allowed to glue the blocks into the cage and to use glue to fill any gaps around the blocks. In this way the blocks should be firmly attached to the model and they should not be able to slide at all. You will not have to “pay” for the extra glue used to fix the blocks into the model. Figure 5 in the "Specification for model building" shows the sort of cage that has worked well before.

You could also use string to hold the blocks in place as well as MDF strips but this string will have to be “paid” for as it will form part of your model.

It is not a good idea to use only string to hold the blocks in place as this is unlikely to be successful and the blocks will probably slide around in the larger shakes. If the blocks move then your model will be disqualified (see section 8.3 in "Specification for model building" )

Can we attach or hang the frame to fix the steel blocks under the corresponding floor?

No. You are not allowed to hang the steel blocks under the floor. The blocks must be supported on the top side of the floor.
