Hello professor:
I'm from A.D.W. and I want to know if we can use extra materials like steel or springs which are not mentioned in the material list when we are making the model?
 Zhou Jie posted on Monday, September 20, 2010 - 06:42 am
Then can we imagine the location as a real place in china?

Hi Jie

No - you can only use the materials that we have mentioned. However, you can be imaginative in the ways you use them. For example, you don't have to use glue sticks only as glue.

Also, you can imagine the location as a real place in China.

Hello professor
I'm from team 4. we wonder whether we could use lubricant to reduce the friction at the places where some rotation or slip is helpfull to reduce the effect of earthquake?

Hello Xiong Chen

You can use only the materials that will be provided at the final. For the list of materials see:
http://www.ideers.bris.ac.uk/dynamicdesigns/materials.html

With a bit of imagination, you should be able to come up with a joint design that allows for some movement.

Professor
I am from team 27.i want to ask about the wood used in the competition.if they are taken from england or provided by Tongji university? What is the exact type of the wood? It is very important when designing our model.

Hello Chen Luyao

The MDF ((Medium Density Fibre) board will be bought in China. The properties of the mdf are shown on

Re your emailed question:

"I am student from Tongji university take part in the seismic design competition. I would like to ask if the materials used in the competition is provided by u or by our school? what kind of materials should we prepare like the kind of wood or the cotton line."

All the materials will be purchased in China and will be provided at the final. You don't need to bring any materals on the day of the final for building your model. See http://www.ideers.bris.ac.uk/Discussion/messages/101/474.html?1274032472 for more details of the materials. Because the materials will be bought in China we don't know exactly what their properties will be but you can assume that they will be very similar to those listed on that page.

Dear Professor Daniell,

We are really concerned about the materials We will be offered with, since materials matter most.

* Strips of MDF board 60cm long with cross-sectional dimensions of 6 mm x 4 mm.
* Sheets of paper
* Cotton String
* PVC hot melt glue sticks
* A Single Square MDF base for your model. The base must be 0.6 cm thick and its sides must be exactly 25 cm long. It must be left solid. However, you may drill up to sixteen holes in the MDF base to help fix your model to it. The diameter of the holes must not be more than 8 mm.

We wonder where to purchase these materials. We want to make sure the materials we use to make trial models before the contest would be exactly the same kind materials we will use at the finals. We plan to buy the materials and practice the construction process, because we think the time is too short to allow for adjustments if the materials are so distinct from what we expect.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Guanghui Zhang, team of legend.

Hello Zhang Guanghui

I cannot help you concerning where you can buy the materials in China - I have only been there once and I wasn't trying to buy this sort of thing .

In the UK, we can buy 6mm sheets of mdf in most hardware stores. The 6 mm x 4 mm strips are then cut from the sheet. You could ask your university technicians to do this for you.

Cotton string is standard in the UK. If you can't find any locally then for a trial model you could use woollen yarn.

If you are having trouble finding the materials and equipment, you could ask your university technicians for some help in doing this.

Some teams have been asking about the MDF strips and what they look like. Therefore I've uploaded some pictures of the stuff we get in the UK at
http://www.ideers.bris.ac.uk/Discussion/messages/101/1175.html?1288803472 I assume it is the same or very similar stuff in China.

MDF is Medium-density fibreboard. It is a wood product made from wood fibres which are stuck together to make a solid material. It is very uniform with the same properties in all axes and it is therefore good for model making. More info can be found at
