Testing Beams and Columns for Bending

To compare the strength of different beams or columns in bending, try this test.

  1. Make up some different beams or columns.

  2. Take one member and clamp it securely at both ends.

  3. Hang weights from the middle of the member.

  4. Note how much the member bends from its original position.

  5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 for other members using the same weights.

  6. Note which member is strongest in bending.

( See Example Test )

Hint ! Try and find a method of making a lightweight member that is stronger than a heavier one.
