To understand how buildings on soft soils behave during earthquakes. This is different to the way buildings on rock or very stiff soils behave. Engineers know how to design buildings on firm ground, and their have a good idea of how to design them for softer ground. However, they need more information for softer soils to help them feel more confident about their designs.

Soils and Buildings

A simple model of a one storey building was set-up on a sandy soil in the shear stack. The shear stack had already been mounted on the shaking-table. The model building and soil were then tested for different earthquakes on the shaking table (Why?). The movements of the soil and building were measured.
