Apartment Block

The structural frame of this apartment block was constructed from steel. The steel bracing members were not strong enough to resist the earthquake forces, so they were bent out of shape, and some of their connections to the columns also broke.

Because the bracing failed, the building was free to sway a long way. It was left leaning dangerously over the street below.
