Freeway Bridge, Los Angeles

(See Close Up of Column)

This concrete bridge, north of Los Angeles, carried a freeway. The east and west bound carriageways were supported on separate bridges running next to each other. The earthquake caused the collapse of the east bound bridge and damage to the west bound one. This picture shows the remaining west bound bridge, after the debris from the collapsed one had been cleared away.

The bridge deck collapsed because the columns of reinforced concrete supporting it were damaged during the earthquake.
