Tilted Building, Adapazari

The city of Adapazari was constructed on the site of an ancient lake bed. So the local ground is made up from layers of sand and silt. The earthquake shook these soft soils causing them to weaken and behave like a liquid (liquefaction) so that they could not support buildings above.

This picture shows a building that tilted over when the foundation on one side sunk into the soil below.
